This Weekend 2/27/09 is Vern Week.

Welcome back to the events page. As you can see, we are building up to Vern Week. Vern week gives each of you the chance to name your own distance goal that we will put up on the roster. Leave us a note in the comments or reply to the team email and let us know what you will be posting for mileage during the weekend of 2/28. Time does not matter for this event and if you are one of the few working through some physical issue. Feel free to bike or use an elliptical machine.

Part of the fun of any virtual event is using you imagination. Please take the time to visit Passamaquoddy and search through the archives of February 2008 for details on last years Vern Week celebration. You'll learn that last years run was not without it's short comings.

Doc Terminus informs me that new air scrubbers have been installed over at Chum Shop Earth and that the running trails are much improved. I am also told that Herring Whips and Sea Perch Pop Ups will be sponsoring the race again this year. Earlier this year many Passamaquoddians were surprised to learn that the Sea Perch Pop Ups were actually cat food. In fact the makers of the frozen treat were shocked that people were eating it by mistake. In an effort to address a growing new market, the formula has been changed to one that is "safe for human consumption."

  1. I'm still in for six miles this weekend!

Last weekend before the Princess Half Marathon so I'm looking forward to sampling one of those "safe" Sea Perch Pop-Ups. Hopefully they'll give me a great vitamin boost. They don't contain any performance enhancers right? Can't take any chances of getting in trouble down at WDW....

  2. Sea Perch Pop Ups are now all natural and contain essential fish oils plus potassium.

That and the constant threat that the government will come in and cap my mileage or bid to take over my feet is just scary! LOL

  4. I am conflicted! I have been planning a 7 mile run for Vern Week, but now I'm at (hopefully) the tail end of a nasty upper respiratory infection. Hmmm. Decisions, decisions!

  5. Put me in for a 10 miler but My goal is 15. E will be riding his bike since he is not allowed to run per Doctor's orders.

  15. I finished my 5 miles on Friday night! I'm so glad Vern Week came along -- I would have only done 3 miles on a normal Friday night. Thanks Vern!

  16. Did the 5 k in 29 min flat. I am so happy with that time. I made 36th out of 50 people. Not to shabby. I thought I was going to be the last one in. So my real question is, does the walk there and back count if so add another 2 miles to my count. That is 5.1 for the day. Yippee!

  17. Holy guacamole, lots of miles and posts! Great work everybody!

I did my run today and hope to get some bike miles (outside) in on Sunday. Planned on 5, but ran 6. The foot is a little sore, but not horrid. Averaged right around 9 minute miles. Heading in the right direction folks! Thanks for the support that y'all have sent my way. Almost back to speed.

    "Know what I mean, Vern.."

  19. Man, my run started out rough this morning. Still fighting a cold and my dogs were pulling on me and I wasn't sure how far I was going to be able to go.

Then, out of the darkness, a ray of light. There in McQueen Park at mile two was the greatest thing I've ever seen. A Sea Perch Pop Ups stand. The volunteers were cheering and a I knew I had to stop and get one for me and one for each of my dogs.

The dogs gobbled them right up - apparently they were tasty treats to them too. I took a cautious nibble... bit salty, a little sweet after taste...Hey, these are pretty good. Now, it could just be that my taste buds are dead from this cold, but I have to say it gave me the boost I needed to keep going.

Sea Perch Pop Ups all done and we were back in the groove. We ran along and met lots of other runners out on their Vern Week runs. We saw horses, dogs, goats, sheep, and would you believe it - turkeys!

I am so glad this was an out and back course because on the way back we were able to enjoy another refreshing Sea Perch Pop Up. Yum!

I was starting to get a bit depressed as I had not seen any one with the Herring Whips along the route. Oh well, we keep running until we hit our six miles.

Yep, we made the full six miles today!

Then we started our cool down walk and what do my eyes behold? You guessed it - there with advertising banners flapping in the breeze the sought after Herring Whip!

The dogs and I stopped and they had little doggy sized portions all ready to go. My dogs were so excited. They dove right in and their tails never stopped wagging.

As you know I have this stinking cold so my throat has been very sore and running only made it worse because I can't breathe through my nose right now. Boy, there is nothing better than a Herring Whip after a six mile run to cool you down and soothe a sore throat. This was the perfect end to my first Vern Week run.

Happy and ready to head home my dogs and I finished our cool down walk.

**In case you didn't want to read the whole saga of my run...I did finish 6 miles today :)!
